The Continental Shop was founded in 1938 by Mr. and Mrs. Ferenc. He was Hungarian; his wife British. They operated the store at 3439 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles until his death.
Brian Clewer purchased the business in 1967 and in 1969 moved it across the street to the Ambassador Hotel, just below the famous Coconut Grove night club.
At this stage the inventory was primarily British and continued to grow with the addition of record albums and, later, audio cassettes.
The Ambassador closed in 1989, and the shop moved to Santa Monica and then in 1991 to its present location further east on Wilshire.
Now, with more than 2,000 square feet of display space, the inventory has grown explosively.
The store is open seven days a week and closes only on Christmas Day.
Regular hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturdays, and 12 Noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays and Holidays.
